Loading games via Steam Quetion

If i were to buy a game that's on Steam's marketplace, but instead i go to my local store and buy the actual DVD. Can i just put in the CD key onto my account, and it'll just download from steam w/o using the DVD at all?For instance, Quake Wars is on Steam. Can i go buy it at Bestbuy and just use the CD key included in it to play the game? I know i can do it with games like HL2 but those are developed by Valve, others may not be. I'm asking this because my DVD drive recently broke and im not sure when ill get a new one. ThanksLoading games via Steam Quetion
