I've bought Orange Box but...

I've launched my steam account, input the cd-key to install Team Fortress 2 but now, it looks like the steam is downloading the game and it would take approximately 16 hours to be completed. Shouldn't I be able to install the game faster with the discs instead? I had installed the steam with the 1st disc, what is the 2nd disc used for then?I've bought Orange Box but...
It's already installed onto your computer. Now Steam has to download it onto the application (which can take a long time, in your case forever). Have you installed all the games or just TF2? Maybe the 2nd disc is another game or something.I've bought Orange Box but...
Yeah, just TF2
Since it's your first game, the downloader is grabbing the source engine. It's huge unfortunately. If you already had another source game it would have been a much faster download :(
Not sure what you're asking. The retail version shouldn't download anything but some updates. I installed all the games a tonce by launching the setup/installer from the first DVD(you need to change the disk halfway through), it worked pretty much like a normal game installation for me.

But if he installed HL2 from the DVD wouldn't that at least include the files for the engine?

Honestly I have no idea how boxed source games work, I've always bought over Steam. Certainly when I bought the booster pack for BF2142 all you got was a box with a download link inside.Seems a bit silly if you can't actually install off the disks in the Orange Box pack though - what he's definately experiencing is exactly what somebody who buys online would get. I'm not sure whether there's stuff on the DVD which intalls after you activate the keys on your steam account. You'll need to speak with somebody else who bought the physical package really.
I notice that in 'MY GAMES' category there is a button that says ''Add non-steam game'', does it mean I can upload a Lucasarts game into their servers, then if I use another computer, I can just download it through steam and play without the need of it's disc? Is that how it works?
i installed Day of Defeat Source on the disk and it put on the entire game, all i needed to download were the updates at the time
Well I bought the retail version and can say that the installation was very clumsy, there was no functioning autolaucher and I had to seek the setup file from the 1st DVD to get it started, something I haven't needed to do in years with other games. I'm guessing the files for TF2 are on Disk2 and the installer just failed to tell the TC to change the disk and instead started automatically downloading it from Steam after he entered the Key. Or he just entered the key in Steam and didn't really even start the install from the DVD. This is how it should work. Install Steam, insert disk1 and start the installer(should lauch automatically, otherwise search it from the 1st DVD), choose the games to install, enter the serial when asked, and it should start installing from the DVD and tell you to change the disk if necessary. No disk is needed on the drive afterwards when playing.

The game has already taken 6 GB in my HD, so I take it that the installation was successful. Yet, it still takes 16 hours for steam to download something, lol

I once got an error while starting up HL2(seemed to conflict with some app), and after that none of my Steam games lauched, I then checked my Steam games and it claimed that none were even installed, I restarted my computer and everything was there again. The wonders of Steam... You could try installing again because that definately sucks especially if it does that with the other games as well.

IT whould have been better if you just pruchsed from steam directly !
IT whould have been better if you just pruchsed from steam directly !
I was intending to purchase TF2 only from steam but the price was only a few dollars cheaper than orange box, so I guess I had a better deal.
did u install the tf2 game from the installer on the disks ? or did u just enter te tf2 code into steam already installed on ur machine ?in the first case it would just download the updates released for the tf2 game, the second case would download the games for which u entered the key, in ur case tf2.and no, add non steam does NOT allow u to upload games to the valve server as u wish... it simply adds a shortcut into ur my games section in steam for the installed game on ur comp, so it is easier and more accesible just by loading steam and finding all of ur installed games there if u wish
