Do operating systems effect gaming?

I recently got the crysis demo. And I loaded it up. My entire rig should be able to play this game in full quality no problem, but it has the enviroments set on medium and wierd lil lines across my screen every now and then.I am using Windows XP home, is there anyway that could be the problem?Do operating systems effect gaming?
specs? and yes OS does effect performance but apparently crysis runs better on XP. Make sure all your drivers are up to dateDo operating systems effect gaming?
Yes, your OS can affect your gaming, but in this case I highly doubt it is XP. Had you said Vista I would have accepted the possibility. What is your rig?
Processor: AMD athlon 64x2 duel core processor 3800+2 Geforce 8600 GTS I also have these wierd problemsduring cutscenes where these lines pop across the screen when the character looks around.not giant white lines. just like when you have a really old TV and stuff.

As for the line problems, I've had it a few times myself. It usually means that your RAM is being fully used and has no more room for functionality. Either you cool your computer down by turning it off for a bit, or get some more RAM to compensate for it.
I would say OS has an effect on performance. Vista is quite a resource hog, and games have been shown to run faster on XP than on Vista on identical systems. On the ironic part, you need Vista to use Dx10.
